Local Heroes

On Tuesday, January 26, 2010, I visited Walter Reed Army Hospital and was able to spend some time with two local heroes who are currently completing their rehabilitation there.  In the photo on the left is PFC Brendon Marrocco from Huguenot and on the right is Sgt. Michael Brown from West Brighton.  These two extraordinary men are great examples of bravery and patriotism.  We are grateful for their - and all veterans' - service to our country.

St. George Ferry Terminal
Is Open For Business

On Friday, January 29, 2010, Au Bon Pain became the first retail store to open in the Staten Island Ferry Terminal, with many more expected to follow in the near future.   The retail space at the Ferry is being completed thanks in large part to Economic Recovery funds.  This marks a new day for all Staten Island commuters as we usher our Ferry Terminal into the 21st century.

The Devastation in Haiti

On January 12, 2009, Haiti was devastated by an earthquake registering 7.0 on the Richter scale.  Since then, my staff and I have been tirelessly working with the State Department to locate Staten Islanders and Brooklynites who were either visiting or residing in Haiti at the time of the disaster and provide the families of the missing with swift and coordinated updates on their loved ones.  I am happy to finally be able to report that all constituents have been located and are safe.

As we've all seen in recent days, the pictures of the horrifying aftermath are incredibly heartbreaking and shocking.  Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and the Haitian people need our help.  If you would like information on how you can contribute to the relief effort, click here for a list of organizations accepting donations.

If you are trying to locate missing family members or friends, I encourage you to contact my Washington, DC office at 202-225-3371 and view the information sheet my office has put together to help you in the process of trying to find your loved ones.

The devastation the Haitian people have suffered should make us realize how fortunate we truly are.  Those who have died or are still missing will remain in our thoughts and prayers.  And to the brave members of the NYPD and FDNY who are in Haiti aiding with the search and rescue effort, we thank you.  Your commitment to humanity continues to inspire us all.
